Safety & Security

Your child's safety is our top priority. Each and every day, we work together with school officials, students, families, and community organizations to ensure our campuses are safe. In the event of a campus emergency or emergency near one of our campuses, an alert message will be posted on the district and/or school’s homepage as soon as possible. If you have information about a safety issue and want to remain anonymous, please contact the Anonymous Tips Reporting Service.

OPENGATE Weapon Detection System

July 26, 2024

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you about an important new safety measure being implemented at our schools to enhance the security and well-being of our students and staff. Starting next week, we will be using the OPENGATE weapons detection system across all our schools.

The OPENGATE system is designed for the automatic screening of individuals with backpacks and bags, effectively detecting potential threats as well as other contraband items that are not permitted on school property.

Here are some key points about the implementation:

1. **Screening Process**: All students and visitors will be subject to screening as they enter the campus during regular school hours. If OPENGATE detects any prohibited items, a secondary search will be conducted. Any contraband found during this search will be confiscated and could result in school disciplinary action and/or legal consequences.

2. **Student Preparation**: To ensure a smooth process, students should remove their computers from their backpacks before passing through the OPENGATE system. We recommend that students use plastic water bottles, as metal containers may trigger an alert.

3. **Visitor Guidelines**: Visitors are encouraged to leave unnecessary bags or purses in their cars to avoid secondary searches. Only identification is required to enter the school.

4. **Demonstration Video**: A video demonstration of the OPENGATE system and its operation is available for you to view. This will help you understand how the system works and what to expect.

The safety and security of our students and staff remain our highest priority. While it may take some time to adjust to using OPENGATE, we are confident that this measure will not cause significant delays and will provide an additional layer of protection for our school community.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work together to maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

What To Do In Emergency

We want our parents to be prepared for what can be done to help the school if we are in an   emergency situation. In the event of an emergency, please follow these guidelines:
  • Please follow the instructions posted to the cguhsd.org website and/or your school’s website.
  • Please, DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL as the phones will be used for emergency situations and staff members will be busy taking care of students' needs. Alerts will be posted to your school’s website’s homepage.
  • If the school is in lockdown, NO ONE (other than emergency response teams) is allowed to enter the school. This is for your child's safety. Please DO NOT COME TO THE SCHOOL. Check your school's website for current information concerning the time and place you can pick up your child(ren).
  • Once the emergency situation is over, any adult coming to the school to pick up the child(ren) must be an approved guardian and must show identification. Students who normally walk home will be allowed to do so ONLY AFTER the police have determined the surrounding area is safe. Under some conditions, students who walk home may need to be picked up. Students who drive may need parental permission to leave campus and drive home.
  • Please make sure your emergency contact information is current and up to date for your students, so we can best communicate with you. Please check with your school to ensure information concerning your current home address, phone number, and email address is accurate. This information is always accessible via your PowerSchool account. If your information is incorrect, please call the high school to update.
  • Please refrain from posting and sharing any unverified information involving an emergency situation on social media. This includes sharing unverified information to Facebook, X, Instagram, Snapchat, and other online platforms. All official school information will be communicated via your school's website, as well as e-mails and text messages from the District Office.
  • Staff members are trained for emergency situations. Our highest priority is the safety of our students.
