(VGHS) Malinah Whatley, daughter of Gary Whatley and granddaughter of Billie and Junious Davis, is the October Rotary Student of the Month. Malinah, a remarkable senior, has distinguished herself not only through her academic excellence but also her unwavering commitment to leadership and community service. For two consecutive years, she has been recognized as the Voice of Democracy, showcasing her eloquence and passion for civic engagement.

In athletics, Malinah has excelled as a 360 AZ All-Academic Girls Soccer athlete for three years running, earning the title of School Athlete of the Year. As captain of both the varsity Soccer and Track & Field teams, she has demonstrated her dedication and leadership on the field. Her accolades include the prestigious American Legion Scholastic Excellence Medal and the Scholar Baller Award, affirming her commitment to both academics and sports.

Beyond athletics, Malinah has made significant contributions to her school community. She is the founder and president of the Black Student Union, fostering inclusivity and representation. Additionally, she is an active member of the AP Club, Bring Change to Mind, Spartan Shout, and the National Honor Society. Her passion for sports journalism shines through her role as Sports Editor and her dedication as a Cheer Manager.

In her personal pursuits, Malinah is involved in the GenYouth Club and serves as a math tutor, helping peers succeed academically. She balances her responsibilities with a job at Firehouse Subs and enjoys hobbies such as puzzles, coloring, and fitness. Her commitment to service extends to her participation in the Boys & Girls Club, where she supports younger students in their development.

With aspirations to study Political Science and Communications at university, Malinah aims to become a diplomat, eventually serving as a government official or ambassador. She plans to join the Air Force as an officer after college, where she hopes to attain a private pilot license and hold a strength and conditioning coaching certificate. Her dreams include traveling the world, establishing non-profit organizations, and, above all, making a positive impact by bringing a smile to someone’s face every day.

Malinah embodies the spirit of service, leadership, and academic excellence, making her an exemplary representative of Vista Grande High School and a deserving recipient of the Rotary Student of the Month honor.
