(VGHS) Drama students had the opportunity of a lifetime on Saturday, March 22, when they saw "Wicked the Musical" live at ASU Gammage. As part of the Kaleidescope program, students spent Quarter 3 learning everything there is to know about "Wicked the Musical". We explored the origin story of Elphaba Thrope, identified the major themes in the lyrics of "For Good" and discovered how costume design adds to the overall mood of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical, "Wicked". All students had the opportunity to respond creatively to this six-week unit. Some created a yearbook for Shiz University, others put together a color palette based on the character development, and some wrote articles for a newspaper.
Students who attended the musical at ASU Gammage traveled north on March 22, enjoyed the enthralling production, and were invited to a dinner with the cast and crew. Cast and crew members took questions from the three schools in the state that were chosen for this opportunity. During dinner, Vista Grande Spartans shared their creative response to the Wicked Unit:
The Ozmopolitan. Michael Reed, a former Broadway dancer, now the Senior Director of Programs at ASU Gammage, specifically called out our Spartans for their incredible work on this newspaper.
On Wednesday, March 26, all eligible Drama students had the opportunity to see "Wicked, Part 1" in the CGUHS Auditorium. Students then presented their work to their peers. All in all, this was a most enjoyable project for the students:
